Magistrate Abdul ‘Azim bin Othman yesterday ordered a Bangladeshi man to settle a BND62,000 fine for possessing 63 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.
Hadiul Islam, 43, would have to serve 16 months’ jail in default of payment. The customs prosecutor revealed in court that the defendant was found in possession of 63 cartons smuggled cigarettes, along with a mobile phone, BND2,245.70 and SGD58.52 in cash.
The findings was a result of an inspection conducted by customs preventive officers at his work quarters in Kampong Panchor Mengkubau at 8.20pm on April 24.
The court ordered the mobile phone and cash forfeited, and the cigarettes destroyed. – Fadley Faisal
