The Bangladesh High Commission in Brunei Darussalam held a musical event in commemoration of the births of two influential figures in its literary and cultural history, Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam, at its chancery in Kampong Tanah Jambu yesterday.
The joint event involved Brunei’s Reading and Literacy Association (ReLA), St Andrew’s School, and the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP). Some 22 St Andrew’s students led by head of primary section and 14 Dato Othman Primary School students led by their principal attended a talk with the high commissioner and received a tour of the High Commission while ReLA President Dr Malai Zeiti Hamid organised a reading of Tagore’s poetry with St Andrew’s students.
DBP Head of Administration and Management Hajah Annisa binti Haji Moksin attended the event.
Rabindranath Tagore, known as the ‘Poet of the World’, excelled in poetry, music, drama, and painting. His collection of poems Gitanjali earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.
Meanwhile, Kazi Nazrul Islam was known as the ‘Rebel Poet’”. He played a vital role in shaping the cultural and political identity of Bangladesh with poems and songs reflecting his revolutionary spirit and advocacy for freedom and social justice.
Both poets are revered in Bangladesh and continue to inspire with their literary works, advocacy for social reform and using creative work to raise awareness about social issues.
