Bangladesh community celebrates ‘Pahela Baishakh’

The local Bangladeshi community celebrated Pahela Baishakh or the Bengali New Year yesterday at the High Commission of Bangladesh in Brunei Darussalam at Kampong Tanah Jambu.

Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud was the guest of honour.

Bangladeshi High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Nahida Rahman Shumona said Pahela Baishakh is celebrated every April 14.

As the date fell within the month of Ramadhan, they chose to observe the occasion later, as they wished to celebrate it with traditional festivities.

The programme yesterday saw traditional song and dance performances and the local community dressed in colourful attire.

The high commissioner said it is a significant celebration for those who are far from home, as it serves as a way to extend goodwill to others and express friendship and love. – Adib Noor
