A 48-year-old man who was caught on CCTV was fined BND1,000 by the Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he pled guilty to a theft charge.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti DSP Haji Hairol Arni handed down the sentence to Pengiran Ayub Azlin bin Pengiran Othman. The sentence carries a one-month jail term if the fine is not paid.
Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Mahli revealed in court that on August 21, at 12.10pm, the defendant was caught on CCTV after snatching a sling bag, valued at BND25, hanging for sale outside a shop at Petani Mall.
The theft was discovered when a worker, suspecting a theft has occured, alerted the store owner to check CCTV footage. The footage revealed that the defendant, accompanied by his child, had taken the bag and left without paying. The matter was then reported to the police.
Upon investigation, the defendant admitted to the offence, stating that he had gone to Petani Mall to buy vegetables but was tempted by the sight of the bag. The stolen item was later recovered. – FADLEY FAISAL
