Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah was named the recipient of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BRC) Henry Dunant Humanitarian Award yesterday.
The minister received the award during the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2022 and Presentation of Appreciation for Nation’s COVID-19 Heroes ceremony at the Goldstone Ballroom of the Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong.
It was awarded for his leadership in spearheading various committees in implementing initiatives to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country, empowering works for an effective economy and ensuring the prosperity and well-being of the people.
The award is the highest appreciation to those who contributed in handling humanitarian work, whether in a conflict situation, controlling an outbreak of infectious diseases, looking after the prosperity and well-being of the community and various sectors of volunteerism.
Yesterday’s ceremony began with welcoming remarks by BRC President Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yussoff bin Pengiran Haji Bahar and a speech by representative of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Geneva, and ICRC Head of Operations and Prevention Martin De Boer.
Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yussoff, in his remarks, touched on the challenges of the association, among which is the preparation for future leaders, spearheaded by youth leaders as one of the organisation’s stated agenda in the 2020-2025 Strategy is to develop youth leadership as a catalyst for Generation 4.0.
Meanwhile, the association marked a significant achievement in implementing a more effective first aid training programme with the introduction of comprehensive training modules and syllabus.
The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society also works closely with the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) in ensuring that the accreditation and standards for the First Aid Certification is uniform and aligns with international standards.
The speech was followed by the announcement of the recipients of BRC Henry Dunant Humanitarian Award 2022; BRC Henry Dunant Leaders Award; BRC Henry Dunant Excellent Service Award; and BRC Henry Dunant Volunteers Award.
After receiving his award from De Boer, Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew presented the other three awards.
Former BRC President Haji Julaini bin Haji Abdul Latip received BRC Henry Dunant Leaders Award while BRC Vice President (Fund Resources and Special Project) Pengiran Haji Mansor bin Pengiran Haji Jaya and BRC Deputy President (Operations and Government Relations) Haji Mohd Suhaimi bin Haji Ibrahim received BRC Henry Dunant Excellent Service Award.
Meanwhile, BRC Henry Dunant Volunteers Award was presented to President of Malam Minggu Pusat Belia (MMPB) Volunteer Group Hajah Noor Monasaliena @ Suzie binti Haji Mohd Salleh.
The minister also presented BRC Gold Honorary Medals to the BRC president; Martin De Boer and Progresif CEO Hajah Nurul Haniah binti Haji Jaafar after which the BRC president presented BRC Silver Honorary Medals to recipients.
The World Crescent Day is celebrated every May 8 around the world.
