Attendees urged to ‘dream big, work hard’

Chair of Postgraduate Advisory and Training Board (PGATB) Dr Ang Swee Hui urged nearly 200 attendees comprising doctors, dentists, medical and dental students, and sixth form students interested in medicine and to ‘dream big and work hard’.

He said this as the guest of honour at the Brunei Medical Association (BMA) Forum on Training at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas on Thursday.

Dr Ang outlined the pathway to medicine and dentistry leading to consultancy, ultimately providing the best care for patients in Brunei. He also elaborated on PGATB’s role such as supervising the quality of trainees and providing training support and structure.

The forum aimed to facilitate discussions on specialty training for doctors and dentists in Brunei with the Chair of PGATB. A parallel student-focused session was also organised, hosted by Bachelor of Health Science (Medicine) senior lecturer and programme leader at Universiti Brunei Darussalam Dr Fazean Irdayati Idris, and medical student Awangku Md Nukman Syawqi bin Pengiran Md Salimin, providing an avenue for sixth form students interested in medicine and dentistry to learn more. The forum also showcased over 20 booths of various specialties in medicine and dentistry including Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC), Military Medicine and Primary Health Care. The booths allowed junior doctors and students access to specialists and training medical officers to discuss career and training pathways, experiences, and network.

BMA President Dr Helena binti Pengiran Oran Kaya Stria Jaya Dato Paduka Haji Hurairah introduced the association and its role to unite and advocate for doctors and dentists in the Sultanate. The BMA strives to support the professionals holistically, in the working and social life, such as demonstrated by the event and other activities by the association. The forum saw a discussion on questions from attendees pertaining to training pathways, requirements and the efforts of the board to support trainees. – Adib Noor
