An assistant narcotics officer was sentenced to two years and eight months’ imprisonment yesterday after pleading guilty to corruption charges under Section 12(B) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 131, with two additional offences taken into consideration.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Khalillah binti Hussin revealed that the case unfolded when the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested a drug misuse suspect in August 2023.
Investigations uncovered that the suspect had obtained sensitive operational information from the defendant, Muhammad Ali Iskandar bin Mustapha, an Assistant Narcotics Officer II.
The court was told that Muhammad Ali Iskandar had disclosed confidential NCB information on seven occasions between June and August 2023 to his drug supplier. This was motivated by his intention to procure drugs at a reduced price while protecting the supplier from enforcement actions.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) later arrested Muhammad Ali Iskandar, confirming his repeated breaches of operational security. Initially denying the charges on March 19, he altered his plea to guilty on December 26. Senior Magistrate Hajah Azrimah binti Haji Abdul Rahman presided over the case, while Defence Counsel Sheikh Noordin bin Sheikh Mohammad represented the defendant. – Fadley Faisal
