ASEAN strengthens cooperation against human trafficking

The 39th meeting of ASEAN Heads of Specialist Anti-Trafficking Units recently held in Penang, Malaysia, was attended by Brunei Darussalam’s delegation comprising the Human Trafficking Investigation Unit under the Criminal Investigation Department at the Royal Brunei Police Force, and a representative from the Welfare and Law Division at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The meeting brought together specialists and enforcement officers from ASEAN member countries to strengthen efforts in combating human trafficking, enhance cross-border cooperation, and discuss updates on prevention, enforcement measures and victim protection. With the threat of human trafficking becoming increasingly complex, strategic discussions play a crucial role in reinforcing the regional framework, in line with ASEAN’s commitment to tackling human trafficking comprehensively and effectively.

Among the key topics shared during the meeting were identifying emerging trends in human trafficking exploitation, understanding the modus operandi of criminals, and exploring the best strategies or initiatives to combat human trafficking in the region. – James Kon
