Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s (APEC) initiatives creating more trade opportunities, enable people and businesses to seize economic growth opportunities and support the sustainability agenda were appreciated.
This was said by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah during APEC Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting in Detroit, the United States recently.
The minister also shared Brunei Darussalam’s trade policy agenda that aims to deepen its economic linkages as well as domestic efforts to empower its population through the provision of quality education, access to skill training and innovation programmes and lifelong learning.
Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew also emphasised the importance of sustaining the good momentum from the 12th World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference last year in producing concrete and mutually beneficial outcomes at the 13th ministerial conference in relation to WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, e-commerce, food security as well as WTO reforms.
The minister also attended the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Ministerial Meeting.
The IPEF meeting marked the conclusion of the negotiations of a first-of-its-kind international IPEF Supply Chain Agreement by the IPEF partners.
The agreement aims to achieve a more resilient, competitive and sustainable supply chain in the Indo-Pacific region while the meeting also took note the positive progress on the negotiations under other IPEF Pillars.
As a small economy, Brunei Darussalam views IPEF as an avenue to bring more economic and investment opportunities to the region, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE), adding that the Sultanate will continue to work closely with IPEF partners to advance the engagement towards achieving a high-standard and mutually beneficial framework.
Permanent Secretary (Economy, Trade and Industry) at the MoFE Dr Hajah May Fa’ezah binti Haji Ahmad Ariffin was also present.
