Al-Quran competition held for primary school students with special needs

An Al-Quran memorisation competition for students with special education needs from government primary schools was held yesterday at the Islamic Da’wah Centre in Kampong Pulaie, in conjunction with the month of Ramadhan.

The competition, organised by the Department of Special Education, saw 21 students participate, and six boys and six girls qualify for the finals.

Md Iqbal bin Shahiman from Kapok Primary School won the male category, with Izzaki bin Zoollhsan from Lambak Kanan Jalan 49 Primary School in second place and Md Nur Azim Muslihuddin bin Attaman from Pantai Berakas Primary School in third place.

Nurul Basyirah Sajidah binti Abdul Rahim from Lambak Kanan Jalan 49 Primary School won the female category, with Nurul Izzaty binti Mehalan from Pengkalan Batu Primary School in second place and Dayangku Nur Amalina Rashidah binti Pengiran Abdul Rashid from Katok ‘B’ Primary School in third place.

The inaugural competition aimed to encourage the recitation of Al-Quran among students with special needs as part of their daily routine.

It also supported inclusive education practices, where students are given equal opportunities to Access, Participate, and Achieve (APA) in various fields, including the mastery of reading of Al-Quran verses.

Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Hajah Safiah binti Sheikh Haji Abdul Salam, the guest of honour, presented prizes to the winner.

Also present was Acting Head of Special Education Eddy Fazlin bin Haji Amdan.
