Aim higher and inspire others, vice chancellor tells star students

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Vice Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman urged award recipients to aim higher and inspire other students at UTB.

She also said, “Graduates will become ambassadors for UTB, and I hope they will represent the university positively in their careers and continue to contribute to society.”

The vice chancellor made these comments at a ceremony held to celebrate the academic achievements of its students and the professional excellence of its staff at the annual Excellence Award Ceremony 2024 yesterday.

The event, held in conjunction with 2024 Convocation, took place at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre, Berakas.

Seventeen academic and non-academic staff were honoured for their contributions to the university and each received a commemorative plaque, a certificate of recognition and a cash prize of BND1,000, while Special Mention Award recipients received certificates to recognise their contributions.

Meanwhile, the Graduate Excellence Awards were presented to a select group of graduates, who demonstrated outstanding performance in their academic programmes. The awards, covering multiple categories, celebrated the academic achievements and dedication of these accomplished individuals as they completed their educational journey.

The ceremony aimed to recognise the accomplishments across various categories, including the Staff Excellence Award (SEA), the Vice-Chancellor’s Award, the University Student Excellence Award, the Outstanding Research Paper Award, the Publication Award, the Dean’s List Award and the Co-Curricular Activities or Student Achievement Passport (SAP) Award.

The event also featured the People’s Choice Award for the UTB Project Showcase 2024.

Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office and UTB Council Member Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, the guest of honour, presented the awards to the outstanding students and staff. Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Fiscal) Pengiran Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Zety Sufina binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Sani, Acting Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Wang Haitao and other members of the UTB Council were also present.

Graduate Excellence Award recipients included the Chinese Ambassador Award; IMECHE-Brunei Award for Best Mechanical Engineering Graduate; Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects (PUJA) Prestige 2024 Student Award; and several other notable accolades, such as the Best Final Year Project Award, Best Capstone Project Award, and Overall Best Project.

The Dean’s List Awards were given to 60 students for their exceptional academic performance and dedication throughout their studies, marking them as high achievers within the university.

Eight students were also honoured for their involvement in co-curricular activities, receiving awards in categories such as Outstanding Life Skill Achiever, Community Service Achiever, Top Culture Award, and Sportsman and Sportswoman of UTB.

Innovation was further celebrated with 10 recipients of the People’s Choice Award for their contributions to the UTB Project Showcase 2024, reflecting the university’s commitment to foster holistic excellence among its student body. – James Kon
