    AI robotics patents: LG sets global benchmark

    ANN/THE KOREA HERALD – Between 2012 and 2021, LG Electronics solidified its position as a global leader in AI robotics patent applications, outpacing competitors from China and the United States.  

    According to data from the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the field of AI robotics patents witnessed remarkable growth, with applications increasing from a modest 20 in 2012 to an impressive 1,260 by 2021. 

    This translates to an average annual growth rate of 58.5 per cent, culminating in a total of 5,525 patent applications during the period.  

    Leading the charge, LG Electronics submitted 1,038 patent applications, representing 18.8 per cent of the global total. Japan’s FANUC followed in second place with 97 applications (1.8 per cent), while China’s South China Normal University ranked third with 83 applications (1.5 per cent). 

    Among other South Korean entities, Samsung Electronics claimed the eighth spot, filing 41 applications (0.7 per cent).  

    On a national level, China dominated AI robotics patent activity, accounting for 60 per cent of all submissions, with 3,313 patents filed. 

    South Korea ranked second, contributing 24.7 per cent (1,367 applications), while the United States followed with 8.1 per cent (446 applications).  

    These findings underscore LG Electronics’ commitment to innovation in the AI robotics sector, positioning the company as a key player in shaping the future of this rapidly advancing technology.
