Two grandmothers were among the oldest individuals to receive their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine last month, urging other senior citizens to do the same, to protect not only themselves but also their family and loved ones against the coronavirus.

Chin Yin Poh, 96, mother of former Minister of Foreign Affairs II Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, received her jab on May 13.

Chin said, “After taking the vaccine, I didn’t feel anything. There was no pain. I did it for the good of me and my family.”

She also expressed gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Government for providing free vaccinations for all.

Chin has eight children – six boys and two girls – and 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

On her secret to longevity, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng believes that his mother used to consume a lot of fish in her younger days as meat was hard to come by.

Meanwhile, 93-year-old Voon Yun Chin was vaccinated on May 25.

“I felt fine after receiving the vaccine. I did get a slight fever, but everything was okay,”
    she said.

On getting vaccinated, she said, “I saw that many people were getting inoculated. So I decided to follow suit to protect myself and my loved ones.”

Voon, who celebrated her 93rd birthday recently, has five children – three boys and two girls – and 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Under the National COVID-19 Vaccination Programme, the drive opened to senior citizens on April 22.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of senior citizens who have received the jab as of June 3 was 5,226.
