The challenges and limitations faced by women and girls to access and having opportunities in football were highlighted in the ‘How the community can advance gender equity in sports’ at the United States (US) Embassy in Brunei Darussalam yesterday.
The informal discussion between local athletes and US alumni was part of the US Sports Envoy Programme headed by Amy Allman Griffin and Lorrie Fair Allen, FIFA World Cup Champions in 1991 and 1999 respectively, and was organised by the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam.
The discussion highlighted on how the community can advance gender equity in sports with possible suggestions being put forward to create a better environment for women in football.
The World Cup winners also shared on the similarities in challenges faced by Muslim-majority countries.
The conversation raised the possibility of forming a women’s sports association by involving female athletes from various sports in Brunei.
