Active weather expected from today to Sunday

Active weather conditions are expected to start today until Sunday with occasional heavy and thundery showers affecting a number of areas.

Wind speed may reach up to 45 kilometres per hour during or near heavy thundershowers.

The Sultanate is currently in the southwest monsoon period, said the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) in a statement yesterday.

However, active weather conditions are still forecasted for the next few days due to the moist atmospheric conditions that enhanced the development of rain clouds.

The BDMD Observation Station at the Brunei International Airport reported that a total rainfall of 161.1 millimetre (mm) since July 1 has exceeded more than half of the normal value of rainfall for July, which was previously 241.8mm.

Over Brunei waters, sea state is generally slight, between 0.3 and 0.8 metres, BDMD said.

The agency said it will continue to monitor the weather conditions and issue weather advisories or warnings if necessary.

The public is advised to take measures and precautionary action to the possibility of active weather conditions. There is risk of flash floods, especially at low-lying and flood prone areas as well as near river banks during continuous heavy rain and also during high tide.

The risk of landslide and fallen trees are also possible during heavy showers and gusty condition.

The public, road users and fishermen are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather forecast, advisory and warning issued by BDMD and to take action to ensure safety.

The latest weather information can be found on the agency’s mobile app, Brunei WX.
