Active weather alert

Typhoon EWINIAR expected to indirectly influence Brunei’s weather

As the nation approaches the end of the inter-monsoon period and anticipates the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in early June 2024, the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) issued a weather advisory regarding the impact of Typhoon EWINIAR.

Currently located northeast of the Philippines at coordinates 15.5°N 122.5°E, approximately 1400 km away from Brunei Darussalam, Typhoon EWINIAR has been upgraded from a tropical storm. Although forecasted to move northeastwards away from the country, its influence is expected to indirectly affect Brunei’s weather.

The convergence of two different wind directions over the region is enhancing atmospheric moisture, leading to the development of rain clouds.

Active weather conditions are forecasted from May 27 to May 29, with occasional heavy and thundery showers expected across many areas. Wind speeds may reach up to 50 km/h during these showers.

In addition, sea conditions are expected to be slight to moderate, with wave heights ranging from 0.4 meters to 1.5 meters over Brunei waters.

There is a high risk of fallen trees, landslides, and flash floods, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as near riverbanks during heavy rainfall and high tide.

All residents, road users, and fishermen are urged to stay informed with the latest weather forecasts, advisories, and warnings issued by the BDMD.
