Respecting diversity in the workplace and in the community paves the way for better problem-solving, more empathy and compassion, deepened learning, and approaching the world from various perspectives, said Head of Medical Social Work Department (MSWD) at Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) Siti Fairuz binti Abdul Latiff.
She said this in her capacity as the Chairperson of the World Social Work Day (WSWD) organising committee during a launch of the event to mark the occasion.
“We dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about different groups. We embrace the differences and similarities of those around us, and understand that everyone is unique,” she said.
PJSC Executive Director Dr Haji Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Awang Besar launched the event.
WSWD is commemorated on the third Tuesday every March, when social workers worldwide stand together, celebrating their achievements, raising the visibility of social services and defending social justice and human rights.
This year’s theme ‘Respecting Diversity through Joint Social Action’, highlights the importance of diversity and working together while celebrating differences.
PJSC, through the MSWD, promoted its role and existence to the public in response to some misunderstanding and misconception of their job responsibilities, said Siti Fairuz.
She added that this year’s theme is about respecting diversity, meaning having a range of people with various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds and various lifestyles, experience, and interests.
“Throughout my career in the MSWD, I often hear our patients and their families share their struggles in meeting people’s expectations, being afraid of not being accepted, feeling unheard, helpless, and misunderstood.
“This affected their mental health, confidence, and self-esteem to face challenges.”
The theme, she added, called on everyone to create a dynamic environment, work together to produce differing ideas and solution while accepting differences, eliminate social barriers, maintain an attitude of respect for others, and giving others the chance to feel valued and connected.
The event launch included a video showcasing the campaign, a presentation of certificates to event partners, a tour of exhibition and vendors, and a group photo session.
Throughout the four-day event, exhibitions and vendors are showcasing local products, with a special forum that will be held tomorrow.
