A taste of Japanese culture

The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam will hold the ‘Japanese Culture Festival 2022’ at Times Square Shopping Centre on December 10 and 11.

The event aims to showcase traditional and contemporary Japanese culture and lifestyles, as well as promote the Japanese language, through stage performances and booths.

Performances and presentations include a Japanese cooking demonstration by the ambassador’s chef Chef Fumihiro Shimizu with mochi pounding, a manga competition, J-pop dances and dessert workshops by Chef Minoru Tsuruoka.

The booths will host games and food, traditional Japanese calligraphy lessons and briefings for Japanese youth exchange programmes.

There will be a special appearance by four lecturers from Urasenke Singapore Tankokai to demonstrate an authentic Japanese tea ceremony. Tankoukai are experts who contributed to the prevalence of Japanese culture by delivering the beauty of Japanese (tea ceremony) as well as the ethics associated with it. Souchoku Nakabayashi has engaged in sadou for over 20 years and will deliver lectures on sadou and serve tea.

The event is held in collaboration with Times Square Shopping Centre, the Japan Foundation, the Lifelong Learning Centre of the Ministry of Education, the Brunei Association of Japan Alumni, the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Alumni, the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme Alumni and Brunei Japan Friendship Association Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Universiti Teknologi Brunei Chapters.
