A Singapore’s professor’s passion in sports performance and mental well-being

The education system in Singapore is globally recognised for its high academic standards, yet it is also known for the pressures it places on students. Studies revealed that one in every ten teenagers in Singapore experiences mental health issues, often attributed to the stress of academic performance.

An Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) Dr Luis Calmeiro focuses his research on Sport, Exercise and Health Psychology, and Sport Pedagogy. In fact, Dr Calmeiro had conducted research on cognitive appraisals, stress and coping, performance under pressure, and children and adolescents’ health behaviours.

“My research interests lie on the consequences of children and adolescents’ participation in sport on their well-being using a salutogenic approach and examining how teachers and coaches can organise their educational intervention to improve young people’s experience of sport,” explains Dr Calmeiro.

Originally from Portugal, Dr Calmeiro earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) scholarship from the Foundation for the Science and the Technology (Portuguese Ministry for the Science and Higher Education) where he completed his PhD in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology at Florida State University in the United States (US). Before joining NIE in 2023, Dr Calmeiro accumulated over two decades of academic experience teaching sport pedagogy, sport psychology, exercise and health psychology and health promotion topics in education in Portugal, the US and the United Kingdom.

“I aim to mentor PhD students who are also interested in cognitive and emotional aspects of sport performance, positive youth development and pedagogical practices that promote not only performance but also personal growth, psychosocial health and well-being,” said Dr Calmeiro.
