Students and instructors from the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Bolkiah Campus in Seria gained a renewed appreciation for literature during a World Book Day celebration.

The event, held on August 15 at the campus’ multi-purpose hall, aimed to foster a reading culture among students and instructors in line with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Book Day initiative.

IBTE Chief Executive Officer and Director of Technical Education Dr Haji Mohd Zamri bin Haji Sabli was the guest of honour. Speaker Dr Haji Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yunos also participated.

They were welcomed by the campus’ head librarian Roziah binti Haji Ali. In her opening speech, Roziah highlighted the origins of World Book Day, which has been celebrated annually since April 23, 1995.

“World Book Day honours books and writers worldwide, recognising their role in providing access to knowledge and allowing readers to gain valuable insights on various subjects,” she said.

With this year’s theme, ‘Read Your Way’, she expressed hope that the wide range of book options available at the celebration would inspire students to explore new genres and interests.

The event featured booths and stalls set up by departments, agencies and businesses, showcasing books by both local and international authors.

Dr Haji Mohd Rozan also delivered a talk titled ‘Swipe Right on the Book: Match with Your Next Read’ offering guidance to students on discovering their next literary adventure. – Daniel Lim
