A one-day ‘community store’ was opened for less fortunate families in the Belait District to pick out free school supplies and other necessities yesterday.
Thirty less fortunate families were invited to the Kuala Belait Youth Centre to take away items donated by the public to help ease their burdens in the coming year. The donated items were collected since December 27.
The event was the first ever organised by the Minda Youth Movement, in collaboration with the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) Care with support from the Youth and Sports Department, Belait District Branch.
The families were invited to visit the store anytime during the day to pick out items they needed. Volunteers also assisted the families during the visit.
Halimah binti Hamijah, one of the invited individuals, came with her three children and two stepdaughters.
She expressed her gratitude to the organisers for creating such a memoriable occasion. “We are happy to be able to come and select the things that we need to use at home, as well as the school equipment for my children ahead of the new year,” she said, adding that such events greatly help the less fortunate. – Daniel Lim
