As the aroma of freshly brewed tea wafted through the air, I was immediately reminded of the global celebration of World Tea Day.

Celebrated annually on May 21, this day holds a special place in the hearts of tea lovers worldwide, including those in Brunei Darussalam.

Tea is not just a beverage in the Sultanate as it is intertwined with the nation’s social fabric and cultural traditions.

With tea being an integral part of Bruneian social and cultural life,  International Tea Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s unique tea traditions and the pivotal role tea plays in everyday life.

Tea has a long and storied history in Brunei, tracing back centuries. It was introduced through trade routes and quickly became a staple in Bruneian households.

Today, tea is more than just a beverage; it is a symbol of hospitality, community, and tradition. To delve deeper into the everyday tea culture in Brunei, we spoke to several locals who shared their personal connections to tea.

Aminah, a 45-year-old resident of Muara, describes her morning ritual. “Every morning, I start my day with a cup of teh tarik, a frothy, sweetened tea. It’s not just about the taste; it’s a moment of peace before the day begins. Preparing and enjoying my tea is a cherished routine,“ she said.

Teh tarik, literally “pulled tea”, is a popular beverage in Brunei, known for its creamy texture and rich flavour.  It is made by repeatedly pouring the tea between two containers to create a thick froth.

This process, often performed with a flourish by skilled vendors, adds a theatrical element to tea preparation that is loved by locals and tourists alike.

Tea and social gatherings

“In Brunei, any social event, be it weddings, family reunions, or religious celebrations, is incomplete without tea. It brings people together and provides a moment of relaxation amidst the festivities,” said community leader Haji Muhammad.
During these gatherings, a wide array of teas are served, ranging from the classic black tea to herbal infusions, often accompanied by local delicacies such as kuih and pastries.

This tradition of sharing tea not only signifies unity but also serves to strengthen social bonds among Bruneians. The act of coming together over a cup of tea fosters a sense of closeness and camaraderie, making these gatherings much more than just a simple social event.

Brunei’s unique tea offerings

Brunei’s tea culture is a vibrant tapestry, intricately woven with unique blends and practices that deeply resonate with the nation’s rich heritage. The selection of local teas reflects the rustic, rural heart of the Sultanate, honouring and thriving from the natural resources with which we are blessed.

“We offer a range of teas that are unique to Brunei, such as pandan-infused tea and lemongrass tea.

These blends not only provide a distinctive taste but also have health benefits that are cherished by our customers,” said local tea vendor Nurul Ain.

Looking ahead

Tea enthusiast Afiqah binti Ahmad eloquently expressed the cultural significance of tea in Bruneian culture, highlighting how it serves as a medium for expressing values of togetherness and respect.

“Whether it’s a casual get-together or a formal gathering, serving tea signifies a warm welcome and fosters a sense of community.”

Reflecting on International Tea Day, Afiqah added it serves as a reminder of the simple pleasures that tea brings into our lives.

“It’s a celebration of our past, present, and future, all steeped in a humble cup of tea.”

From the comforting embrace of a steaming cup of teh tarik in the morning to the cool, refreshing taste of iced pandan tea in the afternoon, and the soothing herbal infusions in the evening, tea remains a cherished element of Brunei’s cultural fabric.
