A bastion of knowledge

2009

Throughout history, public libraries have stood as bastions of knowledge, transcending time and space through written words. From the grandeur of the Library of Alexandria to today’s community libraries, they remain vital to education and culture.

Despite modern technology, libraries, like those in Brunei Darussalam under the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), remain crucial gateways to information, especially for children.

In the Belait District, three such libraries continue to serve as sanctuaries of knowledge for both children and adults. These institutions uphold their role as essential keystones, preserving the essence of learning and community.

DBP Kampong Pandan Library, which recently celebrated its 17th anniversary, sits at the heart of the village, overlooking the picturesque Pandan Lagoon and the nearby Kampong Pandan Mosque.

Established on July 13, 2004, the library was completed two years later and officially opened by then minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Daud, on May 3, 2006.

Over the decades, libraries such as DBP Kampong Pandan Library have had to contempt with the change of times and the rise in the use of modern technologies.

While the hallowed halls of libraries are still lined with indispensable collections of books and references, they are more than that as public libraries are now also vibrant community centres where people of all ages can gather to spend quality time together in learning and exchanging ideas.

As the head of the library, Zaiton binti Haji Nappy highlighted the library’s efforts to adapt to the changing times, promoting reading and learning both within the library and beyond.

These initiatives include increasing the number of books that can be borrowed at a time from five to 10, facilitating convenient returns through a book drop and self-service kiosk, and providing free Wi-Fi and Internet access for registered library members.

Furthermore, the library regularly hosts a variety of gatherings, games and activities throughout the year. These events are either organised independently by the library or in partnership with various associations, government and non-government agencies and departments.

Zaiton highlighted that these collaborative efforts contribute to fostering a culture of reading and learning, effectively turning DBP Kampong Pandan Library into a vibrant community hub that benefits everyone.

Registered library members can access platforms, such as Libby, to not only access books on demand but also acquire audiobooks similar to other popular sites and platforms, all of which are available in addition to all the perks of a registered library member.

The advent of the digital age brought about unprecedented changes in how information is consumed and shared. With the rise of the Internet, smart devices, and digital media, the way people obtain knowledge has been revolutionised. Information that once required a visit to the library is now just a click away.

Despite the prediction that libraries may lose relevance in this digital era, public libraries, like DBP Kampong Pandan Library, have not only adapted but also embraced these modern advancements.

They have implemented Wi-Fi and Internet access, and included e-books in their offerings.

Public libraries also serve as beacons of inspiration and creativity, offering engaging activities to foster imagination.

One such example is the celebration held in conjunction with World Book and Copyright Day. During these events, young students not only read from the wide selection of books and magazines on offer but also actively participate in storytelling sessions led by the librarians.

These sessions often make use of props and smart board projectors to enhance the storytelling experience, immersing children in the narratives. Such activities play a crucial role in sparking children’s imaginations, aiding in their understanding of stories as well as in their personal and character development.

They create environments where young minds can explore new ideas, ask questions and develop a passion for knowledge. For children, libraries are magical places where stories come to life, fostering a love for reading and learning.

Libraries are also sanctuaries for adults, providing a quiet space to delve into research or simply enjoy a good book.

As the world progresses in the digital age, public libraries remain steadfast pillars of knowledge and community, especially those that evolve and adapt. – Daniel Lim
