YANGON (Xinhua) - Flash floods have hit
Myanmar’s Kachin state over the past
few days, forcing over 10,000 residents
to abandon their homes, according to
local Information and Public Relations
Department yesterday.
The flash floods affected over 2,000
households from wards in Myitgyina, the
capital of the state, following a torrential
rainfall.
The rainfall also caused landslides
destroying bridges and creating havoc in
Hsawlaw township.
Local authorities have set up 26
temporary shelters at religious buildings
to accommodate the flood victims with aid
provided.
Meanwhile, water levels of the
Chindwin and Ayeyawaddy rivers are
reportedly rising and residents in low-
lying areas of northwestern Sagaing
region have sought evacuation to safer
places.
Earlier this week, Mon state’s Bilin and
Rakhine state’s Mrauk U were also faced
with the danger of rising water level.

are tracking down a car driver in
connection with a fatal accident
involving a motorcyclist yesterday.

Mohamed in a statement said the

Lukut-Sepang, where motorcyclist,
identified as R M Anandan, 28,
from Tampin Linggi plantation, was
killed.
“The accident was believed to
have occurred when a car driver
from Sepang heading to Lukut
have lost control of the vehicle and
entered the opposite lane before
colliding with the motorcyclist. The
victim was confirmed dead by an
assistant medical officer.
“The car was found abandoned
near the Ambang Kota food court,”
he said.
He said checks on the vehicle
found it registered under the name
of Ting Ting Ming and bearing postal
address in Sepang, Selangor.
“The efforts to detect the car
driver is underway,” he said.
The case was investigated under
Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport
Act 1987.
LABUAN (Bernama) - Labuan marine
police have seized 1,170 litres of petrol
worth RM2,433 which was stored in 48
tanks after an inspection on a suspicious
lorry.
The check at 10.15am was conducted
during Op Landai at Jalan Rancha-Rancha
following a public tip-off.
A 46-year-old local who was the driver
of the lorry was also arrested for further
investigation.

commander Assistant Commissioner
Mohd Pajeri Ali said the petrol was
believed to be manipulated for local
market or to be smuggled to the
neighbouring state.
“The petrol smuggling syndicate
may be using several techniques to
avoid being detected by the authorities,
but because of the efficiency of our
intelligence unit, we are able to curb this
illegal activity.
“Efforts to address the smuggling of
subsidised oil are always in place and we
urge members of the public to constantly
provide us the information on the illegal
activity,” he said yesterday.
He said the seized items, including the
vehicle are worth RM42,433.60.

The
Rural
Development
Ministry
of
Malaysia
recognising that there are people in
Kelantan living in poverty, is taking a
serious of view of such cases.
Deputy Minister R Sivarasa said records
had shown that 12,157 households were
categorised as poor and hardcore poor,
especially in rural areas in the state and
listed in the National Poverty Database
(e-Kasih).
“This was about 20 per cent of the
overall (poverty) statistics compared to
other states in the country.
“To address the problem, we need to
have a complete data including community
mapping of those living in poverty,” he said
after a briefing at the Institute of Poverty
Research and Management (InsPeK),
Universiti
Malaysia
Kelantan
(UMK)
yesteday.
Also present were UMK Vice Chancellor
Prof Dr Noor Azizi Ismail and InsPeK
director Assoc Prof Dr Wan Ahmad Amir
Zal Wan Ismail.
Sivarasa said the mapping carried out by
InsPek comprised eight communitymodels
which were the new indicators for poverty
and they included human capital, social
factors, politics, religion, environment,
culture and economics.
“We in the ministry will work on
resolving hardships faced by the poor in
the country based on the mapping.
Poverty situation in
Kelantan needs attention
LABUAN (Bernama) - Two suspected
illegal immigrants fishing around
Pulau Tiga with two pump boats
were nabbed by Labuan marine
police last Saturday.
The arrest at 10.30am was made
during ‘
Op Gelora Khas
’, as part of
authorities’ efforts to wipe out illegal
fish bombings, cross-border crimes
and illegal fishing and smuggling
activities in Sabah and Labuan.

Pajeri Ali said the focus of the
operation was to check on pump
boats (small boats fitted with water
pumps as engines), used as a mode
for sea transport by villagers on
the islands and non-citizens in
the duty-free-island that borders
Sabah and Sarawak for fishing
activities.
He
said
they
seized
the
unregistered pump boats and the
undocumented immigrants to be
referred to Immigration Department
for further questioning.
Pajeri said the two immigrants
aged 25 and 35 years old were also
found to have flouted Merchant
Shipping Ordinance 1960 and
Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration
Act 1959/63.
The operation comes after the
July 5 incident where a local dive
instructor and two China tourists
were killed by a blast from a fish
bomb at a diving site off Pulau
Kalapuan in Semporna.
The men, and the boats seized
worth RM8, 440 were brought back
to the Sabah Ports and Harbour
Department base in Menumbok for
further action.
