FOR more than half a century, Brunei
Darussalam has been blessed with
peace, prosperity, security and
harmony under the leadership of
His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni
Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali
Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien,
Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
Darussalam.
Under His Majesty, the Malay
Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy
has become the country’s main
identity and guiding values.
Since the proclamation of Brunei
Darussalam’s independence 35 years
ago, His Majesty has repeatedly
remindedthenationthatMIBisthepath
that leads towards the strengthening
of national values, especially in terms
of combating social ills.
His Majesty has also emphasised
that “MIB is not just a national
concept, but it is also important for
Bruneians not to stray from decent
values that have become the identity
and spirit of the nation. The concept
and philosophy of MIB has been
proven to bring positive impact and
act as a buffer to nurture the Bruneian
people, particularly the younger
generation”.
His Majesty has often reminded
the young generation that they must
never allow themselves to be exposed
to harmful negative influences, and
to equip themselves constantly with
virtuous acts and deeds.
Brunei students in overseas
institutions have also been reminded
to uphold their identity, integrity and
that national pride is not measured
from the efforts to become a new
nation,butbysuccessfullymaintaining
one’s cultural heritage and identity.
In the MIB philosophy, one of the
important components of patriotism
is love and respect for the sovereign,
which is a tradition rooted in Brunei’s
socio-politic and economic policies.
This philosophy has been essential
for the protection and preservation of
the rightsof thecitizensandresidents,
regardless of their ethnicity or creed,
while establishing an equitable and
blissful nation with a harmonious
society.
His Majesty once said in a titah,
“It is hoped that [MIB] will enjoin
and instil loyalty to the sovereign, in
forming a base of strength for the
people and the country, while going
through various facets of life and
challenges every now and then.
“It is an essence of our culture,
which not only functions as a
blueprint, but must be developed as
a guide that ensures our way of life
does not deviate from the concept
and spirit of the Malay Islamic
Monarchy.”
Accepting and abiding by the laws
of Brunei Darussalam symbolises
the people’s loyalty towards their
monarch who has contributed
generously to the nation’s welfare.
A prime example is the hoisting of
the national flag on Brunei’s National
Day, which is observed annually on
February 23.
