Over 900 individuals were granted citizenship for Brunei Darussalam during a ceremony at the Bridex Conference Hall yesterday.
Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman presented certificates to 959 individuals during the ceremony, officially recognising them as Bruneian citizens. Individuals included those who had taken the Malay language written test, children of Bruneian citizens, including adopted children as well as wives of Bruneian citizens.
Dr Rozia binti Haji Adenan received the certificates on behalf of her two children.
“Alhamdulillah, I am very happy. We were relieved when we finally got the news that both my children have been granted citizenship.
“I am a Bruneian citizen, and they were born in Brunei. So it makes sense that they are also citizens,” said Dr Rozia, an assistant lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Brunei.
Eunice Sharon Keasberry also received the certificate on behalf of her six-year-old son. “I am really grateful that my son has finally gotten his citizenship. I am so happy. I am Bruneian and I want my son to be Bruneian too. He is a part of me, so it is great that he is now a citizen too,” she said.
Haji Shaifol bin Haji Jol and his brother received their citizenship together. “I was overjoyed when I received the call to attend the ceremony,” said the teacher from the Belait District, addding that he will continue to work hard in the field of education for the nation. – James Kon
