5G adoption drive for Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (ANN/THE STAR) – Marked by an ever-increasing reliance on digitalisation, Malaysian Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has issued a call to local businesses emphasising the importance of embracing 5G technology as it stands as a linchpin for staying competitive in the global landscape.

The rationale behind this plea lies in the role 5G has played in propelling the advancements of developed nations worldwide.

“Today, Internet connectivity, digital accessibility and recently 5G have become crucial components for almost any country and its development.

“In fact we have seen many other countries implement 5G technology and solutions across their industries which have yielded positive results,” he said in a recorded speech at the CelcomDigi MY5G Conference & Tech Showcase 2023 yesterday.

Fahmi pointed out a recent study by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) had identified the five key components needed for a digital nation of which were infrastructure, innovation, data governance, security and people.

“These key components are interconnected and must be developed together to avoid potentially costly gaps and delays during implementation or distribution (of 5G),”

Citing an example, he praised CelcomDigi’s recent collaboration with international logistics and courier service DHL over their combined efforts to launch Malaysia’s first 5G-powered AI autonomous inventory management system in Shah Alam on Oct 12.

“The implementation of AI and 5G technology had not only made their operations more precise but also increased their efficiency by multiple folds.

“With this as a shining example, we hope to see local businesses also take part and eventually lead the development of 5G enterprise solutions,” he said.

Fahmi also praised the CelcomDigi conference and showcase as a key platform in motivating local businesses towards 5G technology adoption.

“This conference will serve as an important platform for diverse industries and stakeholders to come together and explore opportunities in driving 5G adoption.

“As the backbone of our nation’s economy, I strongly encourage all enterprises to take this opportunity to find new solutions and advanced technologies that will drive the next phase of development for your business,” Fahmi said.

The CelcomDigi MY5G Conference & Tech Showcase 2023 featured 18 interactive booths, all of which showcased real-world examples of how 5G is currently being used in various industries in Malaysia.

These included industrial training, EV recharging ecosystems, robotics, business support systems, traffic management and surveillance systems, health services and many others.

The conference, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec), saw the attendance of over 400 leaders and decision makers from 220 companies across 30 key industries in Malaysia.
