500 saplings planted in Berakas Forest Reserve

Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd yesterday planted 500 saplings in its 7th reforestation project across 1,125 square metres of the Berakas Forest Reserve.

Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid attended as the guest of honour.

Deputy Minister (Energy) at the Prime Minister’s Office Haji Mohamad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, Ambassador of China to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Junaidi bin Haji Masri also joined the event.

Hengyi Industries CEO Chen Lian Cai said, “Our gathering signifies more than just planting trees; it symbolises our shared commitment to a sustainable future for Brunei and the world.

“As we look towards achieving Brunei Vision 2035, we recognise the need for a balanced approach that prioritises both economic development and environmental sustainability.

“One of our key objectives is to enhance our environmental stewardship, ensuring that our natural resources are preserved and protected for future generations.”

He added that Hengyi Industries is currently developing a solar energy project on Pulau Muara Besar. The initiative was also held in collaboration with BIBD who sponsored 200 trees.

Some 100 volunteers comprising management and staff from Hengyi Industries, BIBD and the Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office; council members from the Chinese Enterprises Association in Brunei (CEAB); and Hengyi Industries’ interns from UBD, Politeknik Brunei, and Institute of Brunei Technical Education also participated.

Three native species, namely kapur peringgi, kapur paya and meranti sipit laut, were selected for their resilience and ability to thrive in the sandy soil and drier conditions of the Berakas Forest Reserve. Since its inception in May 2019, Hengyi Industries has planted and maintained 4,010 trees across 3.6 hectares of land under the Reforestation Project, making it one of the company’s largest endeavours under the Hengyi One Planet initiative. – James Kon
