50 students honoured at programme closing ceremony

Fifty outstanding students from seven educational institutions yesterday received the opportunity to meet and network with representatives of over 25 different organisations at the closing ceremony of the Future Leaders Academy (FLY).

Held at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, this is the second year of the FLY programme in operation, collaborating with Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and Politeknik Brunei (PB). The programme was extended to students at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) and Belait Sixth Form Centre (PTEB) for the first time this year, teaching students leadership skills and real-work experience by connecting them with 30 prominent industry leaders who graced their institutions as guest speakers.

Singapore Tourism Assistant Chief Executive Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer Ong Huey Hong attended the event in her non-official capacity as a Bruneian from Kuala Belait, sharing her experience on leadership and her inspiring story on achieving career success beyond the border.

A highlight of the event was the panel discussion with seven students that attended the FLY programme.

The students spoke on the topic of ‘A Future Force for Good: Courage, Aspiration, Purpose’, where they reflected on how the lessons from the FLY journey inspired them to be contributing members of society for positive change.

The panellists of students are Khairina binti Kamal from UTB, Mohammad Alwi Syauqi bin Mohamad Ismail from IBTE, Rahimin binti Abdullah from PB, Siti Azira binti Abdullah from UBD, Mohamad Hishamdi bin Mohamad Masuni from UNISSA, Sofea Arryana binti Adi Siswa from MSPSBS and Sorfina Fikriyah binti Abdullah from PTEB. – James Kon
