YANGON (AFP/XINHUA) – A 5.1-magnitude earthquake rattled Myanmar’s commercial hub Yangon on Saturday night, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and AFP correspondents said, with no immediate reports of damage.
A tremor lasting at least one minute was felt in the city of around eight million around 8.55pm, AFP correspondents said.
The epicentre, with a depth of 10 kilometres (km), was initially determined to be at 17.23 degrees north latitude and 96.32 degrees east longitude, which is about 12 miles to the southwest of Bago in Bago region.
The quake struck at a depth of 10km, USGS said, with an epicentre 39km north of Yangon.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
Earthquakes are relatively common in Myanmar, which lies in a tectonically active region.
