    3,309 orphans receive donations ahead of Syawal

    Some 3,309 orphans registered under the Community Development Department (JAPEM) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) received donations yesterday at the National Orphans’ Donation Presentation Ceremony, aimed at easing the burden of orphans during the Syawal celebrations.

    Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, who is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad presented the donations to the recipients.

    A total of 3,309 orphans received donations: 2,165 from Brunei-Muara District, 510 from Tutong, 498 from Belait District and 136 from Temburong District.

    The donations came from the JAPEM Orphans’ Fund (BND330,900), the Brunei-Muara District Orphans’ Fund (BND32,475) and BIBD (BND165,450).

    The ceremony began with the recitation of verses from Al-Quran, Surah An-Nisa, verses 36 to 42, by Muhammad Amsyarrazin Mirza bin Mohammad Arizza, followed by the translation by Aqlan Fathullah bin Sharifuddin students from Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

    The event continued with the recitation of Doa Selamat and Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan led by Haji Mohd Amaluddin bin Haji Jamaluddin from Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam Mosque in Kampong Jerudong.

    The National Orphans’ Donation Presentation Ceremony is organised by the JAPEM under the MCYS, in collaboration with the Brunei-Muara District Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs and BIBD.

    Members of the public can provide financial assistance to orphans registered under the national registry by donating to the Orphans’ Fund Secretariat at the Management and Administration Division, JAPEM, Level 2, MCYS during office hours.

    The public can also donate via SMS Brunei Prihatin campaign for the Orphans’ Fund 1446 Hijrah/2025, which runs for nine months from February 25 to November 25. To donate, send an SMS with the word YATIM (without spaces) followed by the donation amount (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 50, or 100).

    For example, YATIM20 (for a BND20 donation) and send it to 38111 for Datastream Digital Sdn Bhd (DST) and Progresif Sdn Bhd customers or 39999 for imagine Sdn Bhd customers.

    The public can also make donation through BIBD online banking or by transferring funds to account number 0000-101-004-9034 under ‘Tabung Anak-Anak Yatim’.

    Orphan registration counters are open today and on March 8 at the Sports Hub, Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. – James Kon
