27.72 kg of heroin seized in northern Myanmar

YANGON (XINHUA) – Myanmar authorities have seized 27.72 kilogrammes of heroin in Kachin state of northern Myanmar, the state media citing the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control reported yesterday.

Acting on a tipoff, anti-narcotics police searched a 22-wheeled vehicle in Mohnyin township of Kachin state on April 14 and confiscated the heroin being carried in soap containers, the report said.

An investigation showed the drugs were transported from Shan state to Kachin state. Two suspects were charged in the case. The seized narcotics are worth over MMK690 million (over USD328,571), it said.

The suspects were charged under the country’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, and further investigations were underway, it said.
