    James Kon

A total of 25 locals were issued compound fines for violating the Chapter 30 of Miscellaneous Offences Act for improper disposal of plastic food containers and drinks as well as cigarettes butts in public areas.

The offenders were caught by law enforcers of the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department during ‘Operasi Bersih’ in the capital during His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 76th birthday celebration.

This year’s number of violations shaved a 63-per-cent decrease compared to last year, when 67 individuals were fined.

The violators will face no more than BND1,000 fine, while for corporate bodies no more than BND2,000.

Failure to settle the fines will lead to legal action where, upon conviction, individuals will be liable to a fine of no less than BND1,000 and not exceeding BND3,000 for the first offence.

For subsequent offences, the penalty is a fine of no less than BND10,000 and no more than BND30,000; imprisonment for no more than 12 months; or both.

The public can lodge complaints to Darussalam Line 123, WhatsApp to 8333123, or contact the Law Enforcement Division of BSB Municipal Department at 7291122.
