Speaker of the Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib delivered an address as the 21st Legislative Council session adjourned, praising members for their dedication and the productive discussions that had taken place.
In his speech, the Speaker expressed gratitude to all those involved in ensuring the smooth running of the meeting, highlighting the important work carried out behind the scenes.
“Though many may be unseen, their efforts are invaluable in ensuring that our proceedings run formally and smoothly,” he said. The meeting saw the successful completion of 187 questions and the robust debate of over 400 issues in the committee stage, with members contributing more than 57 hours of discussion.
The Speaker emphasised the ongoing improvements in the legislative process, noting that there had been a significant shift from holding the sessions once a year to twice a year, a change aimed at increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the legislative body. He also highlighted the need to continuously update the procedures and working processes in accordance with the Standing Orders.
Reflecting on the improvements in the quality of debate, the Speaker acknowledged the members’ progress in speaking with clarity and composure. “Members have shown remarkable focus and the discussions have become more structured and effective,” he said, underlining the importance of constructive dialogue for the nation’s development.
The Speaker also drew attention to the need for members to provide thorough feedback on government policies, ensuring they lead to positive impacts on the welfare of the nation. “Debates should be based on facts, offering alternative viewpoints that can contribute to better policymaking,” he said.
In closing, the Speaker stressed the significance of cooperation, innovation, and resilience as the country moves toward achieving Brunei Vision 2035 goals. He encouraged members to embrace challenges and work together to address the uncertainties of the future. “The world is evolving rapidly, and we must be prepared to face the challenges ahead,” he concluded.
The 21st Legislative Council session was adjourned, with plans to reconvene later this year for continued discussions on key national issues, including the economy, education, healthcare and security. – Fadley Faisal
