20th Legislative Council session begins today

The first session of the 20th Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting begins today, graced by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

LegCo Speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib will chair the meeting. He will be assisted by Clerk to the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet Ministers’ Council and Clerk to the LegCo Dr Hajah Huraini binti Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Jaya Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hurairah.

The meeting will discuss the supply bills for the 2024/2025 financial year before they are approved and gazetted to be utilised on April 1. The LegCo meeting is an important tradition in the monarchial system of government, having been carried out for more than a century.

LegCo members are representatives of the people in a meeting that serves as a platform for appointed representatives to voice national issues through strategic discussions and idea-sharing to strengthen governmental policies for the well-being of the people and the country. Some 34 LegCo members, comprising ex-officio members, those bestowed with titles, those with achievements and appointed representatives from the districts are set to participate in the annual event.

Invitees to the official opening ceremony are advised to screen for COVID-19 prior to attending the event, upload the results onto the BruHealth app and present to the invitation committee members.

Guests who have symptoms, such as fever, cough, flu and breathing problems are advised to not to attend the ceremony. – Azlan Othman
