2,000 saplings planted to support climate change fight

Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) along with other higher education institutions and schools under the Ministry of Education (MoE) participated in planting 2,000 saplings at the ISLE Garden and around the Phase 3 area of the university campus on Saturday.

Spearheaded by UTB Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the activity was held prior to the UTB Convocation Ceremony which will be held on February 12, and in conjunction with the inauguration of the Green Protocol Tree Planting Campaign.

About 133 saplings were planted by UTB staff, students and alumni. According to the Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change, as one of the key strategies to transition the Sultanate into low carbon and climate-resilient nation, increasing forest cover would increase the carbon sink, which would positively impact the habitats, biodiversity, and ecosystems of the country.

The 10 key strategies to combat climate change issues that must be achieved in line with Brunei Vision 2035 are industrial emissions; forest cover; electric vehicles; renewable energy; power management; carbon pricing; waste management; carbon inventory; climate resilience and adaptation; and awareness and education.
