Some 200 students have been found to be infected with COVID-19 after undergoing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test between January 31 and yesterday.

“The students are from 106 schools and higher educational institutions. However, no school clusters have been detected as all cases involving students have been linked to home clusters,” said Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar yesterday.

The minister also said that as of yesterday, 55 active clusters had been detected, comprising mostly residential and staff houses, adding that only three clusters involved public premises.

A total of 159 Omicron cases were detected from gene sequencing testing on samples of 704 positive COVID-19 cases, said Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham, adding that 93 were imported and 66 were local. All the Omicron cases detected in the Sultanate have been either asymptomatic or shown mild symptoms.

Another 545 samples were found to be the Delta variant.

Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham also said there are no Omicron cases categorised in Category 4 or 5. Omicron has been found to be replacing Delta as the dominant variant in the Sultanate.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin also attended the press conference.
