15 weighing machines fail inspection checks

Officers from the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), Industry and Business Ecosystem Division under Ministry of Finance and Economy (MoFE) on Monday conducted spot checks at the gerai perayaan (festive stalls) held in conjunction with the 76th birthday celebration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The operation was part of the initiative to protect consumers and encourage local businesses to be transparent. During the operation, SDT officers also checked weighing machines to ensure that they comply with the Weights and Measures Act, 1983, Chapter 151 and the stipulated guidelines under the Act.

During the inspection, SDT officers found 15 units failed to comply with the Weights and Measures Act 1983, Chapter 151. The owners of the equipment were issued with a notice and are required to register the equipment within three working days.

As stipulated in the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994 under Section 3(2); every person who uses or has in his possession for use for trade any weight, measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by this regulation shall be guilty of an offence.

The penalty for such offence is a fine of BND1,000 or imprisonment for three months or both and instrument for weighing shall be liable to be forfeited and any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure or instrument for weighing shall be void.
