Some 140 students from secondary schools, colleges and sixth form centres participated in a two-day Mental Health Awareness Teambuilding 2023 activity organised by the Engagement and Enrolment Department of the Management and Science University (MSU), Malaysia under the second series of the ‘Community Engagement Brunei Chapter’ held on May 6 and 7.
The programme is a collaborative event between MSU Brunei Chapter and the Kampong Belimbing Village Consultative Council (MPK Belimbing), with the first series carried out last November 27, 2022 at Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park in Kampong Belimbing Subok, resulting in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between MSU and MPK Belimbing in preserving the objectives of sustainable development goal (SDG).
The second series was implemented through a Hari Raya Aidilfitri event by including sustainability values, ‘SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities’ in preserving the cultural heritage of both Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam and is hoped to have raise and dignify culture among people of all ages.
The programme, which was also held at Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park, aimed to raise awareness and interest in loving the environment at the early stage in safeguarding the stability of the eco-system and supporting recommendations to preserve cultural heritage in the community, especially among the student generation.
The programme also showcased MSU support towards sustainable development of the environment through community service programmes.
Themed ‘Dari Lemang ke Ambuyat’, the programme saw students participate in group activities, communication exercises and competitions, learning outside the classroom and fostering leadership qualities and high-level thinking ability, a method believed to help deal with the issue of mental health symptoms among students.
It also nurtured the spirit of cooperation between the participants. Activities conducted on the first day included weaving ketupat, crossword, 3R fashion design, drag and draw, liplap Raya and hijabista competitions.
Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Dato’ Raja Reza bin Raja Zaib Shah presented prizes to the winners.
On the second day, the event was attended by Permanent Secretary (Municipal and District) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Abdul Walid bin Haji Matassan as well as Dato’ Raja Reza and officials from the Ministry of Education and Malaysian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam.
Dato’ Raja Reza officially launched the SDG-3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and presented prizes to the winners of the Dari Lemang ke Ambuyat competition.
