A total of 103 kilogrammes (kg) of trash were collected along the coastline at the Berakas Forest Reserve Recreation Park recently during a beach clean-up campaign organised by Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) through its student body Halalan Thayyiban Student Society (HTSS) from the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre (HTRC).
According to UNISSA, 80 per cent of the rubbish collected in the recent clean-up was plastic.
In the opening speech, Director of HTRC Pengiran Dr Hajah Norkhairiah binti Pengiran Haji Hashim said the campaign was a way to raise awareness on the environment and the importance of maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
She also said the campaign lent support to the government in a joint effort to ensure public beaches and recreational parks are clean and rubbish-free.
“The programme has received quite an encouraging response, and it also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” she said. Meanwhile, UNISSA in its press statement said, “The programme is one of the alternatives to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in maintaining cleanliness which is part of the Islamic faith. Therefore, keeping the environment clean is the responsibility of the community to make the universe safe from any pollution, especially beach pollution.”
