Ten contestants will compete in the finals of a Poetry Recital on Brunei History at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports’ (MCYS) hall on December 2.

The contestants were selected from 13 who competed in the preliminary round at the Brunei History Centre in the capital yesterday.

The Brunei History Centre with the cooperation of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) Supreme Council Secretariat Office organised the preliminary round. Brunei History Centre Acting Deputy Principal Mohammad Faisal bin Haji Mat Salleh and Special Senior Duties Officer at the MIB Supreme Council Secretariat Office Dr Haji Ramlee bin Haji Tinkong were present.

Each contestant recited poem with Begawan rhythm by extracting seven lines from one of three materials – Sejarah Bangsa: Antologi Syair, Syair Perlembagaan Negeri Brunei by Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam and Syair Rakis by Al-Marhum Pengiran Shahbandar Pengiran Md Salleh ibnu Pengiran Sharmayuda.

The competition is held to disseminate history education and instil the spirit of appreciating and upholding traditional literature and arts heritage among the youth.

This is in line with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah at the 18th National Youth Day celebration where the monarch called on the youth to embrace Bruneian values. – Azlan Othman
