Md Zakwan bin Md Nizam and Eqwan Danish bin Doming emerged winners of the Brunei Shuttle Time Under-13 Badminton Championship for the Tutong District after they defeated Robby Ferguson Chong and Bobby Ferguson Chong in straight sets in the boys’ final at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Tutong Sports Complex yesterday.
The pair of Fira Waqir bin Safri and Mohd Amin Naqib bin Norizan claimed third place.
Amelda Fong Ful Tze and Nur Haziqah binti Zainal took the girls’ title, followed by the pairing of Alya Marfuah binti Shaifulbhari and Nurul Hanisah binti Sanuddin.
Siti Nursyaikyilah Atiqah binti Md Jefri and Nazaratul Sahira binti Md Izzanuddin completed the top three winners. Head of the Youth and Sports Department of the Tutong Branch Kamil bin Lamat presented the prizes.
Organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Badminton Association (BDNBA), the Shuttle Time Championship is held across four districts on selected dates.
The tournament in the Tutong District commenced on December 2 with seven entries including four boys’ doubles and three girls’ doubles teams. The matches were contested in a round robin format.
In the Temburong District, it concluded on Friday which saw the duo of Hazery Hazimie anak Bugin and Muhammad Nur Hakimin bin Haji Mokhsin winning the boys’ crown, while the partnership of Evy Cheryll binti Udan and Sukrinah Amelda won the girls’ event.
The next tournament will be held in the Brunei-Muara District starting from December 9-11, with the same date in the Belait District.
The competition aims to unearth young talents from each district to be absorbed into training and to represent the country in badminton competitions locally and abroad.
The Shuttle Time programme is a school badminton programme which supports the principle that children should lead an active and healthy lifestyle both inside and outside of schools.
