A 24-YEAR-OLD local man was yesterday sentenced to two months’ jail after pleading guilty to stealing a mobile phone from a 36-year-old woman.

DPP Raihan Nabilah binti Ahmad Ghazali told the court that in the afternoon on January 23, Mohammad Sahibul Hamizuddin bin Hasnan, who was desperate for money, waited at a convenience store at Bukit Panggal in Tutong.

He sprang into action after seeing a woman alighting from her vehicle (with engine left running), to buy something from the store.

The defendant took a gold coloured Huawei mobile phone from the vehicle and ran away. He discarded the SIM card and memory card, with the intention to sell the phone.

Realising her phone was missing, the woman reported the incident to the police, who checked footage of the store’s CCTV camera.

The defendant surrendered at the Tutong Police Station on January 31, 2019.
