Young minds explore role in nation-building

Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) in Development took centre stage during the ‘Kopi Talk With MHO: Youths Engage in Shaping Brunei’s Future’ as participants examined how the MIB underpins Brunei’s identity and progress.

The event offered a platform for young minds to tackle national challenges and explore their role in realising Brunei Vision 2035 at the Youth Hub, Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium on Sunday.

Organised by Vil-Laju! the Brunei youth gathered for the ‘Kopi Talk’ with journalist Malai Hassan Othman or better known as MHO.

Themed ‘What Can You Do For Your Country in Achieving Wawasan 2035?’, the programme featured in-depth discussions on governance, youth leadership and actionable solutions to some of Brunei’s most pressing issues.

Youth proposed innovative strategies to balance modernisation with the preservation of Brunei’s traditions and values.

The session on ‘The Role of Youths in Achieving Wawasan 2035’ empowered participants to envision their responsibilities as future leaders with the conversations underscored the importance of skill-building, lifelong learning, and staying informed, emphasising how proactive youth engagement could propel Brunei toward its ambiguous goals of a skilled workforce and sustainable economy.

‘Challenges, Opportunities, and the Way Forward’ provided a forum to discuss critical issues such as unemployment, underemployment and limited opportunities for young people. The participants brainstormed actionable solutions, including fostering entrepreneurship, promoting inclusivity and developing industries that align with national aspirations.

The session also saw breakout groups exchange insights on leveraging community engagements and innovative policies to tackle these challenges while the event’s interactive format kept participants engaged throughout.

Meanwhile, the fireside chat with MHO, moderated by Muhammad Khaizuran bin Haji Muhammad Wardi of Vil-Laju! Brunei, instigated a discussion on civic engagement and youth empowerment, followed by a World Café Session, where breakout groups rotated through themed tables to brainstorm creative solutions to Brunei’s challenges.

The programme concluded with a ‘Reflection and What’s Next segment’ allowing the participants to summarise their discussions and outline actionable steps to advance national progress.

Speaking on the sidelines, a participant commented that it is empowering to see how MIB principles can guide development while addressing real challenges like unemployment.

“I feel more motivated to contribute to Brunei Vision 2035 from today’s discussions.” Vil-Laju! Brunei, the youth-led organisation behind the initiative, hoped that the event would inspire greater youth involvement in nation-building.
