The much-anticipated You-C1000 Basketball Cup in conjunction with the 75th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam made a return amid much fanfare at the Brunei Basketball Association Court in Batu Bersurat last night.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin officiated the launch during the opening ceremony.
The ceremony commenced with the singing of the national anthem followed by welcoming remarks from Deputy President of Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Lim Boon Teck.
Lim said, “The tournament can be dated as far back as 1960s. It is commonly called the Sultan Cup as it is always held in conjunction with His Majesty’s birthday celebration.
“In the 60s and 70s, shops would close early so that people can get off work early in time to grab a seat at the court whenever this tournament is being held.”
He added, “The tournament have been a permanent fixture in Brunei annual sport calendar and had been held uninterrupted for decades. That is until last year, when we had to face challenges brought about by COVID-19.”
Meanwhile, the reading of the player’s oath was led by Darren Yap, a member of the Pegasus team.

The opening ceremony also witnessed the minister tossing the ball for the first tip-off to officiate the launch of the championship.
Meanwhile, BBA President Jake Goh Kiat Hing conveyed gratitude to Aewon for sponsoring the new official BBA attire.
Earlier, the first game of the tournament saw Fateh Sdn Bhd register a comfortable 112-79 victory over Concept Xtrike-Me in Group ‘A’.
The second game of the tournament featured a Group ‘B’ clash between heavyweights Easyway Basketball and TK Tea House.
Organised by the BBA, the tournament will conclude with the final on July 24.
