THE Private Education Section of the Ministry of Education is holding a series of workshops titled ‘Reading A-Z’ for teachers.
The workshops are being held in two parts, the first workshop on January 31 and February 6 (Group A & B). The second workshop will be held on February 16.
The workshops are held in collaboration with JAPSS (Brunei Private School Leader).
Seventy-eight English Language teachers from various private schools nationwide are taking part in the workshops.
Facilitated by the Principal of Sports School Matt Letham, the first workshop held at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Primary School Hall focussed on familiarising teachers with ‘guided reading’.
It is advised that guided reading must be consistent, every child must have a book, the book must be levelled and given an introduction such as information on key vocabulary and key phonics.
The workshop also highlights the use of the ‘Pause, Prompt, Praise’ method or ‘The Three Ps’ which allow teachers to assist students with difficult words while teaching them how to self-monitor and correct themselves.
For example, ‘Pause’ for seven seconds and not to jump in and give the kids any answer, ‘Prompt’ them about phonics, picture, sentence construction and context of the story/text. ‘Praise’ them specifically like ‘well done you used the picture’.
The second workshop will focus on ‘running records’ where teachers would learn how to assess the students.
