Three local car workshops were slapped with compound fines by the Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department during the recent Operasi Bersih 14/2024 for violating Section 12, Chapter 30 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021.
According to the municipal department, the operation targeted Menglait Gadong and found workshops disposing used vehicle oil, which flowed onto public road and drainage, while commercial waste, such as used car spare parts, were left in open areas.
Faulty vehicles were also found abandoned on government land as well as public roads.
Two workshops were issued with a fine of BND2,000 each while another workshop received a compound fine of BND1,000.
Meanwhile, a foreigner was slapped with BND300 for violating Section 12(1)(e) of Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021. Offenders were told to settle their fines within seven days.
Under the Miscellaneous Offences Act (Amendment) 2021, the compound fine for individuals reaches BND1,000, while for a corporate body, up to BND2,000.
The failure to settle a compound fine will result in the case being brought to court.
An individual found guilty will face between BND1,000 and BND3,000 in fine for the first offence, and between BND3,000 and BND9,000 in fine, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, for subsequent offences.
Meanwhile, any company found guilty will face a fine between BND2,000 and BND10,000 for the first offence, and between BND10,000 and BND30,000 fine, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both, for subsequent offences.
The department also reminded the public and premises owners to maintain cleanliness for the safety and well-being of the people. – James Kon
