A WORKSHOP and a refresher course for new parents and existing member parents at the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei Edge Centre in Kampong Mata-Mata was considered an important component of the efforts to educate the public and address the issues concerning children with autism.
The workshop facilitated by SMARTER Brunei President Malai Haji Abdullah bin Malai Haji Othman was attended by new parents that have a child or children with autism, as well as parents that wanted to enhance their knowledge on autism.
Malai Haji Abdullah explained that the workshop intended to empower parents and to ensure they have the right knowledge and skills in interacting and managing their children who have autism.
He stressed that this workshop was designated for parents only, though there is interest from other groups of society.
He added that another workshop will be held in March for other groups wishing to participate in a workshop on autism, and the public are welcome to attend this workshop regardless of whether they have a member of their family with autism or not.
Anyone wishing to attend the March workshop can contact him at 7172991.
The fee will be $50 per head inclusive of food, he said.
He also hopes to conduct similar workshops with greater focus on issues that parents face at home with their children with autism.
Malai Haji Abdullah expressed his appreciation for contributions from the public, and his organisation as an NGO needs donations and contributions from the public to help maintain their sustainability and existence in their efforts on educating parents and the public on autism issues.
