Work-life balance ruined by ‘Janji Melayu’ phenomenon

I would like to see more employers in the country taking work-life balance seriously.

I have a friend, who is a senior officer at her workplace. Her son regularly misses religious classes because my friend’s superior is prone to holding meetings until past lunch time.

As a result, she is often late picking up her children from morning school, making it hard to get her son to his afternoon classes on time.

I believe the ‘Janji Melayu’ phenomenon is to blame for why some meetings drag on longer than necessary. This is especially true when the most senior of officers insists that the meeting commences only once the full team is present, despite knowing full well that quite a number of them have punctuality issues.
