Eight members from the Women’s Institute of Brunei Darussalam (WI) attended the 13th Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) Area Conference for Southeast Asia and the Far East in Kuching, Sarawak in Malaysia from July 4-7.

WI Deputy President Hajah Shamsiah binti Abdul Latif led the delegation.

Some 202 delegates from Brunei, Malaysia, Cambodia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Singapore participated in the event to engage in network building and collaborate as well as encourage the sharing of knowledge.

The conference hosted by the Sarawak Federation of Women’s Institute (SWFI), themed ‘Diversity is our strength’, was launched by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, who highlighted the importance of empowering women to play meaningful roles in the government.

The conference also highlighted the significance of women in assisting each other in the field of education, environment, technology, societal advancement and leadership.

WI Deputy Honorary Secretary II Hajah Salenawati binti Haji Md Saji said the gathering was an opportunity to gain knowledge from experts from various fields.

“I am fortunate to be able to meet and exchange experiences with delegates from other countries, as we all share the same goals and vision of seeing women playing the main role in contributing back to their country,” she said.
